He was the Chief of Nephrology at Park Plaza Hospital, affiliated to UT, and he was the Chairman of the Board of Institutional Review, that oversees the clinical research and reports to the FDA. Currently, he is on the Board of Governors of Plaza Specialty Hospital, and the Association of Healthcare Management (AHCM). In 2013, he received the recognition of clinical superstar in DaVita for his work as Medical Director of DaVita Northstar Dialysis
Dr. Tuma is the founder of the Houston Chapter of the AAMA and was one of the four founders of NAAMA in the late 70s. In 1998, he co-founded the Ben Qurrah Award for Excellence in Medicine; two of the recipients of this award were distinguished nephrologists and past presidents of ASN, Dr. Ramzi Cotran and Dr. Wadi Suki. In 2004, he was the chairman of the 26th National Medical Convention, which was held in Houston and during which Dr. Tuma honored Dr. Michael DeBakey with the Life Achievement Award.
Finally, Dr. Tuma’s national and international recognition was highlighted when he was listed in the Marquis Who’s Who in The World, The Who’s Who in Frontiers and Technology, Personalities in America, The Oxford International Who’s Who of Intellectuals and The Top Doctors in America. Dr. Tuma is a member of the New York Academy of Science, The International Society of Nephrology, ASN, NKF, RPA and many other organizations.
He also served on the Presidential Task Force commissioned by President Reagan, and was a member of the inner circle club of the Senate.
