Introducing the Tuma Innovation Prize
The latest changes in healthcare, rules and regulations created a significant awareness of the need for innovation in medicine to keep adequate service within the limits of the designated budget.
The increased demand of spending, because of the growing population and survival of Dialysis patients, mandate the finding of more efficient ways to improve the quality of healthcare without increasing the cost.
The objective of the award is the advancement of science and the promotion of cost-effective healthcare.
The Prize
Tuma Innovation Award is a monetary prize of $5,000 donated by Samir & Grace Tuma Foundation (501c) each year to the winner of the award challenge. The goal of the award is to motivate young practicing nephrologists to be creative in finding new innovation within the existing diagnostic and therapeutic means to achieve this goal.

Dr. Samir & Grace Tuma Foundation
This foundation is a non-profit charitable organization (501c) founded by Dr. Samir & Grace Tuma to promote medical and scientific education and research as well as providing humanitarian and cultural activities. It’s based in Houston, Texas, but has worldwide philanthropic activities.
About Dr. Tuma
Dr. Samir Tuma is retired professor of medicine at UT and Baylor, graduated from Hadassah Medical School in Jerusalem. Dr. Tuma spent a significant portion of his professional life in academic medicine starting at the University of Haifa, then USC, then Baylor, and ending at the University of Texas. In 1974, he received the Young Investigator Award from the ISN. While he was Deputy Chief of Nephrology in Haifa, he opened the first dialysis Unit in the West Bank, which was the first in that region of the Middle East. In Houston, he co-founded a network of five dialysis centers that were acquired later by DaVita.
